I understand that you are going to make the software for it open source - bravo. To me, this looks like an absolutely ideal controller for software like max/msp etc -and this is why the fact that it remains usb, without built in sounds is very very important.
I suppose it does depend upon the market you are going for, but it's important to be forward thinking.

Of course, there's no reason not to have USB and built-in sounds (and MIDI out).
OK, there are reasons: cost & bulk. But my guess is that, with today's technology, some built-in sounds wouldn't significantly increase either for the thummer.
It'd be nice to just be able to plug an 1/8" to 1/4" cable into the thing & into a PA for times when you don't want or need to schlep around a full rig.
