I'm VERY concerned about you wanting to put all the control into the software. I had hopes to use this device to control an outboard MIDI sound module (my Roland SoundCanvas Pro88). If any use of this devise will require a PC, then IT WILL BE OF NO USE TO ME. I *will not* invest in a laptop so I can use this device away from home. I strongly urge you to make this first Thummer as a controller. If you want to come out with a "dumb" version (dumb in the sense that it mearly sends out key info and joystick info) then do that later.
I'm afraid that the Open Source Community may not come up to speed on software for this device before it's targeted delivery date.
Thank you, Grant Levy Costa Mesa, California

If I read Trifle's "edit" correctly, I agree with him. I'll wait for the "MIDI-d up" version, too.
Thanks, Grant Levy

Very cool controller, I might want one of these!
But - please don't make the mistake of not including MIDI, or at the very least a small cheap and reliable USB <-> MIDI box. I'm afraid you're making a bad business decision. Without MIDI I'll have to pass on it, and I know none of my friends would consider a controller without MIDI. The main reasons for this; immediacy, simplicity, compatibility, reliabilty, latency. As for time to market, I can't see how a basic MIDI out port can add much time or cost - It'll be worth it!

OK, you've convinced me.
Version 1.0 of the Freedom Thummer will have:
1) a MIDI Out jack, through which standard, plain-vanilla MIDI will be emitted
2) a USB peripheral jack, through which (a) the same plain-vanilla MIDI will be emitted, (b) the raw control data stream will also be emitted, and (c) power will be input, whether from a computer, USB hub, or wall-wart.
That allows the Thummer to be used in a computer-less MIDI environment, as many have requested, and also to "just work," emitting MIDI via the USB-MIDI standard when plugged into a computer -- no special software required on the computer.
However, the raw data stream will still be emitted down the USB wire, and the open-source software on the computer will allow anyone who wants to play with that data to do so.

That's excellent news! I for one will also want to work with the raw control stream.
